NICE guidance on teplizumab
Teplizumab was licensed by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in August 2025, to delay the onset of Stage 3 Type 1 diabetes for up to 3 years in adult and paediatric patients 8 years of age and older with Stage 2 Type 1 diabetes.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is responsible for developing evidence-based guidance for the NHS on new medicines and on June 23rd, NICE approved the use of teplizumab on the NHS for the people described above.
In the UK, there is no screening programme available on the NHS, so instead, people are likely to learn they are at risk of Type 1 diabetes through blood tests carried out for other conditions or because it runs in the family. This new drug needs to be given in hospital through a drip into the vein once a day for 14 days.
