DVLA updates regulations for Group 2 drivers with diabetes
A change in the Motor Vehicles Regulations came into effect on 7th November 2025 and it specifically affects lorry and bus (Group 2) drivers who have diabetes treated with insulin.
- Under the changes, Group 2 drivers will have the option to use Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems (CGMS) as an alternative to finger-prick blood glucose testing. The DVLA say that this shows the progress in diabetes technology, and this change means that Group 2 drivers now come under the same rules as car and motorcycle (Group 1) drivers.
- The requirement to check glucose levels within 2 hours before and every 2 hours during driving remains unchanged. The CMGS allows these checks to be carried out in a less invasive and more convenient way.
- These changes apply across England, Wales and Scotland, however, Group 2 drivers who either relocate abroad and exchange their GB license or temporarily drive in another country must ensure that they understand and comply with local regulations regarding the use of CGMS and other medical devices.
