Year 6 Lesson Plan
All About Diabetes
How to use the resources

Personal Social Health & Economic Education (PSHE) is currently a non-statutory part of the curriculum. Many schools choose to teach it because they find their pupils benefit from learning through presentations, creating posters and role play which enables them to manage their feelings and build positive relationships with others. PSHE promotes positive behaviour, mutual respect and self-awareness.

The Trust feels that PSHE classes would be an ideal place to raise awareness and promote an understanding of diabetes.

The resources can be used in two ways:

Question and answer presentation: The presentation can be downloaded on to a memory stick and used as a white board presentation. The aim is to present the children with questions that they can attempt to answer and then the correct answers can be revealed when the teacher chooses.

Research Tool: By using the IDDT website the children can find the ‘All About Diabetes’ web page and use the material to make poster, give a presentation or carry out role playing activities.

Examples of poster: A poster could be used to raise awareness of the symptoms of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

Examples of presentations: The children could make a presentation to the class about the causes Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

Examples of role plays: The children could act out what happens to people with diabetes if there blood sugars drop (hypo) and how to deal with hypos.

I’m sure that you will find these lesson plans really helpful but if you have any queries or suggestions then please don’t hesitate to contact the Trust.
